Since the global health crisis commenced, 20 percent of all child COVID-19 cases in the US have been diagnosed since mid-August, according to a team of pediatricians. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) in court documents submitted in a federal lawsuit against Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, the prevalence of the Delta variant of the coronavirus and the start of the school year have bolstered the susceptibilities to children. The total of pediatric novel coronavirus cases has been surging. The team underscored that 20 percent of all child cases were diagnosed from Aug,13 to Sept. 16.

According to the AAP, “This surge appears to be due to two principal factors: the resumption of in-person schooling (and particularly schooling in places without masks), and the emergence of the Delta variant, which is more than twice as contagious as previous variants.”
According to the team of pediatricians, 93,824 child COVID-19 cases were recorded from Jul. 29 to Aug. 5, The total number of child coronavirus cases has risen by 4% since July 22. As of August 5 since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, almost 4.3 million kids in the nation have tested positive for COVID-19.

Justin Gill, an urgent care nurse practitioner, stated children are not as vulnerable to severe illness as adults. However, with more cases come more admissions to hospitals. Gill remarked that with the presence of the Delta variant, they are witnessing a number of vaccinated and unvaccinated younger people, but the broad majority of cases who get hospitalized tend to be uninoculated persons. Children under 12 years old cannot be administered COVID-19 vaccines yet with testing in younger age groups underway.
According to the AAP and the Children’s Hospital Association, new COVID-19 cases in children have been bolstered since July following a phase of decline in the early summer. Dr. Yvonne Maldonado, a professor of pediatrics and infectious diseases at Stanford University, said COVID-19 is really tracing the uninoculated. The doctor added that due to the situation that children under 12 are not yet allowed to be vaccinated, they are witnessing the same surge in COVID-19 cases in that group due to the contagious Delta variant. The increasing number of child hospitalizations due to the virus could further stress an already inundated pediatric health care system.
