Pharmacist Accidentally Administers 4-Year-Old Child With a Pfizer’s COVID-19 Vaccine

Why Did the Mix-Up Transpire?

This occurred on September 18 when she and her family went to a Walgreens for flu doses. The Walgreens pharmacist accidentally inoculated her against the coronavirus. The Pfizer vaccine is not approved for kids below 12 years old. However, the company is working towards receiving clearance from federal supervisors.

The Olivier family immediately went home and started searched through internet-based resources. Poison Control and a 24/7 nurse’s hotline provide a few answers. The family is reportedly not opting to ask Maryland regulators to probe into what transpired. Walgreens has sent its apologies to the child’s family.

Statement from Walgreens

According to Walgreens in a statement, “Patient safety is our top priority. Events like this are extremely rare and we take this matter very seriously. We are in touch with the patient’s family and we have apologized.”

It added, “Our multi-step vaccination procedure includes several safety checks to minimize the chance of human error. We’ve recently reviewed this process with our pharmacy staff in order to prevent a future occurrence.”

Moment of Confusion

Prior to leaving their home on September 18, Martin and Victoria Olivier and their child struck a deal. As a reward for good behavior amid the family’s pharmacy visit for their annual flu doses, Colette shall expect a sugary treat for being a good girl. When the Walgreens pharmacist asked who wanted to be injected first, Colette adamantly sprang up to volunteer and her parents had a moment of relief. The pharmacist later recognized the mistake after she received the shot.

What the Predicament Means

The wrongful vaccination had Olivier posing questions including whether there will be side effects and if their child needs to go to the hospital. The resulting predicament is a glimpse of the daily queries, difficulties, and dubiousness parents meet as they navigate through the global health crisis with their kids. The past 19 months have forced families to their limit as they juggle the potential risks and benefits of a world drastically changed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
