Black Friday Stabbing: Inmate Targets Derek Chauvin 22 Times in Bid to Impress BLM

On November 25, 2023, former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who was convicted of killing George Floyd, was stabbed 22 times by another inmate, John Terssak, at a federal correctional facility in Tucson, Arizona. The attacker, a 52-year-old Mexican Mafia gang member, is serving a 30-year sentence for extortion and other crimes.

According to court documents, Trussak confessed to the attack and told investigators that he targeted Chauvin because he wanted to impress the Black Lives Matter movement. He also said he attacked Chauvin in a symbolic act on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving.

Charges against Truschak include attempted murder, assault with intent to murder, assault with a dangerous weapon and assault with serious bodily injury. He is awaiting trial in federal court.Chauvin’s attack has led to renewed calls for prison reform, with critics stressing the need to shift focus from punishment to rehabilitation to address the violence and hopelessness that plagues many prisons.

Opinions about the prison system vary. Supporters maintain that the attack on Chauvin was an isolated incident. They argue that prisons are an important tool for protecting the public from dangerous criminals by acting as a deterrent to crime and providing a safe environment for inmates. Despite this view, the recent attack on Chauvin has intensified the ongoing debate over prison reform. This incident led to a critical review of the social role of prisons and the need for reform.Reform advocates emphasize the importance of addressing systemic problems such as violence and hopelessness in prison environments, and propose alternatives that prioritize rehabilitation over punishment. As the debate continues, the attack on Chauvin serves as a flashpoint for reevaluating the effectiveness and purpose of our current prison system.
