32-Year-Old Woman Throws Two Children To a Bridge in Louisiana

A woman from Louisiana was arrested on Friday on the grounds of multiple felonies for the death of one of her children and the attempted murder of another.

Shreveport police reported that she carried two of her small children over onto a huge bridge, flung them both over the edge, and sent them plunging into a lake below. One of the children died, and the other suffered serious injuries.

Ureka Black, 32, was charged with one count of second-degree murder for the death of her infant son and one count of attempted second-degree murder for hospitalizing her five-year-old son, according to New Orleans ABC affiliate WGNO-TV. Officers from the Waskom Police Department apprehended her at a rest stop in Waskom, Texas, Friday afternoon. The names of the children have not been made public.

According to police, Black tossed both of the children off the Cross Lake bridge on Friday morning. At approximately 11:00 a.m., the Shreveport Police Department received a call reporting a child floating in the lake near the bridge. Officers from the Marine Patrol were summoned to the area, where they discovered an unconscious small newborn. The baby was dragged from the water and declared dead.

The Shreveport Police Department, the Shreveport Fire Department, the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office, Life Air, the Louisiana State Police, and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries all assisted in the three-hour-long multi-agency search. Law enforcement officers involved in the search were afraid that Black’s third child was missing and might have been in the lake as well, but they were able to confirm that the child was safe in another place.

The officers proceeded to scour the lake and were able to locate and recover the five-year-old child, who was subsequently taken to LSU Oschner Health Shreveport with “life-threatening injuries,” according to police. The child’s condition had been lowered to non-life-threatening on Saturday. He is reportedly expected to make a full recovery.

According to WGNO, the surviving child provided authorities with evidence that was vital in identifying Black as the one guilty for her children’s injuries.

Agencies started looking for Black and issued a “Be On the Lookout” notice for her gray Dodge Caravan with Texas license plates. Later that day, a police officer in Waskom, Texas, saw the vehicle and apprehended the defendant. Black is now being detained in Texas without bond and is awaiting extradition back to Caddo Parish, Louisiana.
