During his college days, Vaughn quickly rose to prominence as the starting point guard in his freshman year, stepping up to replace the incumbent starter, Calvin Rayford.
In 1997, Vaughn’s talent earned him the 27th overall pick by the Utah Jazz in the NBA draft. He showcased his skills not only with the Jazz but also with the Orlando Magic, the Atlanta Hawks (in two separate stints), the New Jersey Nets, and the San Antonio Spurs.
Transitioning to coaching, Vaughn began as an assistant coach with the San Antonio Spurs from 2010 to 2012. His coaching journey continued as he was named the head coach of the Orlando Magic on July 28, 2012. However, his tenure with the Magic came to an end on February 5, 2015. Vaughn then took on the role of professional scout for the Spurs during the 2015–16 season.
In a new chapter, Vaughn joined the Brooklyn Nets as the top assistant coach under Kenny Atkinson for the 2016–17 season. He later assumed the interim head coach position in March 2020 following Atkinson’s mid-season departure. However, on September 3, 2020, the Nets appointed Steve Nash as head coach, and Vaughn returned to his role as an assistant coach.
