In New York City, tenants are worried about their evecti0n as they experience extreme cases like harassment or assault as landlords forcefully vacate them from their rent houses.
The Pandemic Moratoriums Ends
On Saturday, the city’s eviction moratorium is set to expire and millions of renters all over the country are worried about being evicted from their homes. During the Covid-19 outbreak, housing advocates are alerting people as they see a surge in illegal evictions.
Sateesh Nori and other advocates are still trying out to figure out how much worse it can become because the moratorium essentially eliminated lawful evictions. Nori is the legal counsel in Aid Society’s Queen office, where he defends people in housing court who have been wrongfully evicted.
Furthermore, the New York City Police Department does not like to get involved in these disputes, instead of telling the tenants to fight it out in housing court. The NYPD did not provide any response to any of the issues.
The department’s patrol guide says uniformed officers should prepare actions when there’s probable cause for an unlawful eviction prepare a summons and serve it make an arrest or refer evicted renters who have been unable to secure temporary housing to the city’s Department of Homeless Services.

Lack of Law Enforcement Towards Tenant
A lack of law enforcement assistance in such cases is a nationwide crisis, according to Bruce Marks, CEO, and co-founder of the Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America. After the federal moratorium was implemented during the start of the pandemic but ended July 31, Marks said, a large wave of tenants ramp up in the state which they call for help with eviction cases, leading his organization to launch a team of economic justice advocates to deal specifically with illegal evictions.
The group now has 35 advocates across the country providing full support for more than 30,000 house renters, and around 20 percent are included with the unlawful harsh eviction cases. In addition, Marks said that he and other supporters are seeing tenants get locked out of their homes for owing thousands of dollars in rent or getting priced out by corporate landlords. Moreover, Mark said that the landlords don’t consider the renter as a person instead, they see that tenant as a tool to make more money for them. Several issues that Nori believes, are there might be establishing a basic level of housing rights for renters.
