The Buffalo Bills selected Matt Milano in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft, making him the 163rd pick overall. The New England Patriots gave this pick as compensation for signing another player. The Patriots signed running back Mike Gillislee, who was a restricted free agent at the time. Matt Milano was the first of two linebackers selected by Buffalo in that draft, the other being Tanner Vallejo from Boise State.
On May 11, 2017, Matt Milano and the Bills agreed to a four-year deal worth $2.66 million. This included a signing bonus of $261,506. In the third week of the season, Matt Milano had an amazing game with a sack, an interception, a fumble recovery, two passes defensed, and eight tackles in a 27–6 victory over the Minnesota Vikings.
