Adam Johnson was an American ice hockey forward. He appeared in 13 games in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2018–19 and 2019–20 seasons.
Additionally, he played in Europe with teams such as Malmö Redhawks, Augsburger Panther, and Nottingham Panthers. Tragically, Johnson lost his life when an opposing player’s skate blade accidentally cut his neck during a collision on the ice, causing severe bleeding.

Adam Johnson died on 28 October 2023 in Sheffield, England, UK at the age of 29.
On October 28, 2023, a tragic incident occurred with Johnson in front of 8,000 fans at the Utilita Arena during a game against the Sheffield Steelers. Johnson’s throat was accidentally hit by the skate of Steelers player Matt Petgrave during a collision on the ice in the 35th minute of the game.
In a video capturing the incident, Petgrave’s left skate was seen inadvertently making contact with Johnson as he began to fall after colliding with another Panthers player. After the impact, Johnson bravely attempted to skate toward the team bench despite bleeding, ultimately collapsing on the ice. Responding quickly, paramedics took care of his injury and teammates formed a protective circle around him.
As the seriousness of the situation became apparent, protective sheets were raised, players returned to the locker rooms and spectators were asked to leave the field. Johnson was immediately taken to Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital, where he was tragically pronounced dead.
