JPR Williams was a well-known Welsh rugby union player. He played rugby for Wales during the successful era of the 1970s. Around 1973, four years after he first played for Wales, everyone called him J.P.R. Williams or just JPR, when J.J. Another player named Williams (also John) joined the Welsh team.

Recently, rugby union player JPR Williams died on 8 January 2024 at the age of 74 in the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, United Kingdom.

JPR Williams died of bacterial meningitis, after a short illness. JPR Williams’ fans are paying tribute to him through social media.

JPR Williams Early Life

JPR Williams’ real name was John Peter Rhys Williams. JPR Williams was born on 2 March 1949 in Bridgend, United Kingdom. JPR Williams’ height was 1.85 m.

JPR Williams’s parents were Margaret Williams and Peter Williams. JPR Williamss has three siblings Mike Williams, Phil Williams, and Chris Williams.

JPR Williams did his studies at Bridgend Boys’ Grammar School (now Brynteg Comprehensive School) and then Millfield School in Somerset, and St Mary’s Hospital Medical School.

JPR Williams was a married man. JPR Williams’ wife was Scilla Williams. the couple has four children- Lauren Williams, Peter Williams, and Annie Williams.

JPR Williams career

Playing as a fullback, he was known for his aggressive attacking style. With his long sideburns and socks around his ankles, “JPR” became an iconic figure in the successful Wales team in the 1970s. Even though he played fullback throughout his international career, his preferred position was flanker, where he played for Tondu towards the end of his career.

JPR Williams is among a small group of Welsh players, including Gerald Davies, Ryan Jones, Gareth Edwards, Adam Jones, Gethin Jenkins, and Alun Wyn Jones, to have won three Grand Slams. Professionally, he worked as an orthopedic surgeon and remained involved in rugby after retiring, eventually becoming chairman of the Bridgend Ravens.
