Neri Oxman was a professor of media arts and sciences at the MIT Media Lab, where she founded and led the Mediated Matter research group. Her works have been displayed in exhibitions at renowned institutions such as the Museum of Science Boston, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), SFMOMA, and the Center Pompidou, all of which have included her pieces in her permanent collections. MoMA curator Paola Antonelli praised her, calling her “a person ahead of her time, not of her time.”
In 2006, Oxman started a collaborative research project at MIT called Materials Ecology, focused on exploring generative design. She joined MIT as a professor in 2010 founded the Interdisciplinary Mediation Case Group at the MIT Media Lab and earned tenure in 2017.
However, in January 2024, Business Insider journalists reported cases of plagiarism in Oxman’s Ph.D. Essay. Following this revelation, Neri Oxman issued an apology for the quotation errors. Another Business Insider article highlighted Oxman’s alleged plagiarism of entire paragraphs from sources such as Wikipedia without proper attribution.
