Ben was living happily in his life but suddenly his life took a turn when he was diagnosed with systemic scleroderma. Systemic scleroderma is an autoimmune disease that causes the skin and connective tissues to harden and tighten. Ben’s illness put limits on his sports career and his dreams.
Ben continued to inspire the baseball community with his resiliency, even after his diagnosis. In memory of Ben Fonseca, an initiative was launched to raise money to help his family.
