He was born Louis Bernstein to Jewish parents, and also his early exposure to music was unconventional. But his passion for music overcame his family’s initial opposition pursued.

How did Leonard Bernstein die?

Renowned conductor Leonard Bernstein died of a heart attack at his home in New York in 1990 at the age of 72. The heart attack was thought to be caused by mesothelioma, a rare cancer associated with asbestos exposure. Bernstein had announced his retirement from conducting just five days before his death. His wife had lung cancer and she died 12 years before him. Bernstein was buried next to her at Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York.
