Student aid recipients at George Washington University received grants totaling up to $3,000 from the third round of federal stimulus funds GW received during the pandemic, according to The GW Hatchet. President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan awarded over $12 million in student aid to over 10,000 students.
The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021
COVID-19 has had a devastating impact on the United States’ economy and health, and the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 is designed to help the country recover. This economic rescue package is among the most expensive in American history in terms of dollar value.
According to The White House, after the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021 passed in December 2020, Congress also passed the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, which is the third stimulus package to be during the COVID-19 pandemic. These bills are extended in part, but new recovery methods are also created.
An economic downturn following an international pandemic necessitated the passage of three stimulus bills by Congress: the CARES Act (March 2020), CRRSAA (Dec. 2021), and American Rescue Plan (June 2021). The Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund was referenced in all three bills (HEERF). HEERF provides emergency funding for students and institutional grants to cover the costs of significant changes in the delivery of instruction due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

HEERF II
According to Students Success, the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 provided the third round of funding to GW in the summer of 2021, dubbed HEERF III. The university’s administration will make a funding distribution decision in the summer of 2021. More information about how the university will distribute funding to students with exceptional needs is coming to campus this fall, around mid-semester.
As compared to the previous two government acts that provided emergency funding in response to the ongoing pandemic, this third round of emergency funding is open to any student who is currently enrolled at George Washington University or was enrolled at any time on or after March 13, 2020.
