The Agreement
According to CNN, an unprecedented reference to fossil fuels is made in the agreement. Even the landmark Paris Agreement could not accomplish that. The unabated use of coal and other inefficient fossil fuels must be phased out, according to the Glasgow Climate Pact.
The agreement calls for countries to step up their efforts to combat climate change by increasing their 2030 climate goals by the end of 2017. It calls for a 45 percent reduction in global carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 compared to 2010. In addition, developed countries agreed to at least double their collective funding for aiding developing countries in their efforts to adapt to climate-related harms by the end of the decade.

Not Sufficient
Global leaders have also agreed on the rules for carbon offset markets, which allow countries to receive credit for their emissions in exchange for financing climate-cooling projects. Additionally, the agreement calls for the elimination of “ineffective” fossil fuel subsidies. All fossil fuel subsidies had been called for earlier this week, but the language was changed to include a qualifying adjective on Friday.
Some activists had called the agreement as a betrayal of the planet and the people. The “incremental progress” made in Glasgow, according to the small island nations, was not sufficient. According to Al Jazeera, Saleemul Hug, director of the International Centre for Climate Change and Development had said that
“As far as I am concerned, it is a failure; I’ve come here with a single agenda which is to help the poorest people on the planet who are already suffering from the impacts of human-induced climate change. And we needed a Glasgow facility on loss and damage finance here. 138 developing countries put language in the text yesterday. It got removed overnight. It’s not there anymore. It has been replaced by an offer for a dialogue … absolutely disappointing and totally unacceptable.”
