Climate Summit

According to The Hill, Biden is scheduled to arrive in Glasgow, Scotland, on Sunday for the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), a summit aimed at addressing the growing challenges posed by climate change. Neither Russian President Vladimir Putin nor Chinese President Xi Jinping will be in attendance.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres also expressed his disappointment by tweeting on Sunday that he had left Rome with his hopes unfulfilled but vowing to keep the 1.5-degree target alive at COP26 by following through promises on finance and climate adaptation for people and planet, as per Forbes.

President Xi Jinping of China and President Vladimir Putin of Russia participated virtually in the meeting and are expected to do so again at COP26. This will be a setback for climate talks because China and Russia account for a third of global greenhouse gas emissions.

World’s Last And Best Hope

Biden praised his own administration’s efforts to spend billions of dollars on climate change resilience in his Build Back Better infrastructure plan in a prepared speech after the G20 meeting in Rome. Global leaders have agreed on a vague timetable for reaching carbon neutrality “by or around mid-century” as they wrapped up a two-day summit laying the groundwork for the upcoming United Nations climate conference.

According to CBS News, the G20 agreed to stop public funding for coal-fired power generation abroad but did not set an end date for the use of coal domestically. COP26, which runs until November 12, is widely regarded as the world’s last and best hope in the face of a catastrophic climate crisis.
