Barbara Walters, a broadcast journalist and television personality who began her career on the Today Show in 1962, died at the age of 93.
Barbara’s Childhood
Dena and Lou Walters welcomed Barbara Walters into the world in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1929 (although she stated 1931 during an on-camera interview) (born Louis Abraham Warmwater). Her parents were Jewish and descended from Russian Empire immigrants. Abraham Isaac Warmwater, Walters’ paternal grandpa, was born in ód, Poland, and came to the United Kingdom, changing his name to Abraham Walters (the original family surname was Waremwasser). On August 28, 1909, Lou Walters, his father, and two brothers left London for New York.
His mother and four sisters came in 1910. Her father owned and operated the Latin Quarter nightclub when she was a child. This club was founded in collaboration with E. M. Loew and was based in Boston. Her father founded the New York counterpart of the Latin Quarter in 1942. He also served as a Broadway producer, directing the 1943 Ziegfeld Follies.
Barbara’s Private Life:
Walters married three different men four times. Her first spouse was a business entrepreneur and former Navy officer Robert Henry Katz. They tied the knot at New York City’s Plaza Hotel on June 20, 1955. According to reports, the marriage was cancelled after eleven months, or in 1957. Her second spouse was Lee Guber, a theatrical producer and theatre owner. They got hitched on December 8, 1963, and separated in 1976. After three miscarriages, Walters and her husband adopted a baby girl called Jacqueline Dena Guber. She had three marriages before she met Merv Adelson, the CEO of Lorimar Television. They got married in 1981, and they got divorced in 1984. After being remarried in 1986, they went through their second divorce in 1992.
In college, Walters dated lawyer Roy Cohn, who claimed to have offered marriage to her the night before her wedding to Lee Guber, but Walters denied this. She justified her lifetime dedication to Cohn to thank him for his assistance in adopting her daughter, Jacqueline. In her memoirs, Walters expresses gratitude to Cohn for his legal support of her father. Walters claims that her father was detained for “failure to appear” after failing to attend a hearing in New York while the family was in Las Vegas. Cohn was able to have the case dismissed. Walters provided testimony as a character witness at Cohn’s 1986 case for disbarment. Walters dated the future chairman of the US Federal Reserve in the 1970s, and she had a love relationship with US Senator John Warner in the 1990s.
In her book Audition, Walters revealed that she had an affair with Edward Brooke, a married United States Senator from Massachusetts, in the 1970s. It is unclear if Walters was also married at the time. Walters said they halted the romance to preserve their jobs from public scrutiny. In 2007, she dated Robert Neil Butler, a gerontologist who won a Pulitzer Prize. Walters was close friends with Tom Brokaw, Joan Rivers, Woody Allen, and former Fox News CEO Roger Ailes from the late 1960s until he died in 2017. Walters said in 2013 that she regretted not having more children.

Throughout her distinguished career, Walters has received numerous honours, including the President’s Award from the Overseas Press Club, the Lowell Thomas Award for a job in journalism excellence, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Women’s Media Foundation, and the Muse Award from New York Women in Film and Television. She has also received a Primetime Emmy, three Daytime Emmys (including a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000), seven News and Documentary Emmys, a GLAAD Media Award, and a Television Critics Association Award. Barbara was elected into the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame in 1989 and got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2007. She was #34 in TV Guide’s 1996 “50 Greatest TV Stars of All Time” list.

Walters announced that she would undergo open heart surgery to replace a damaged aortic valve in May 2010. Even though she had no symptoms, she had known for a long time that she had aortic valve stenosis. The treatment to repair the defective heart valve “went well, and the physicians are quite happy with the result,” Cindi Berger, Walters’ publicist, said four days later. In September 2010, Walters returned to The View and her Sirius XM satellite programme, Here’s Barbara. Walters left both programmes permanently four years later. On December 30, 2022, Walters passed away at her New York residence at 93.
