Philippe Streiff was a French racing driver who lived from June 26, 1955, until December 23, 2022. He raced in the 55th Grand Prix after making his Formula One debut on October 21, 1984. He finished on the podium once and collected 11 championship points. The quality of his treatment after his pre-season testing catastrophe at Rio de Janeiro’s Jacarepaguá circuit in 1989, which left him paraplegic and dependent on a wheelchair, has been called into doubt. However, the crash was so violent that the roll bar fractured on impact.
Streiff organised the Master’s Karting Paris Bercy. Streiff and Hughes de Chaunac suggested purchasing Ligier in early 1994. The Williams F1 team backed the offer, which utilised Renault engines and aimed to turn Ligier into a “junior” team. The request was turned down. Belgian Luc Costermans, who set the world record for the quickest blind road travel in late 2008, dedicated his victory to Streiff.

His best result came in the 1985 Australian Grand Prix in Adelaide, when he finished third with Ligier. Unfortunately, a tragic incident during winter testing at Jacarepagua in Brazil in 1989 terminated Streiff’s racing career. He lost control of his AGS, which barrel-rolled into the track’s run-off area and had its roll bar torn off, severely exposing the unlucky driver. Due to significant spinal cord injury and shattered cervical vertebrae, Streiff lived in a wheelchair as a person with paraplegia.
Albeit being a latecomer to racing, Streiff had a successful junior career before rising to the top of the Formula 2 field with Henri Julien’s AGS team, despite only winning one race in the championship at Brands Hatch in 1984. That year, he also made his Formula One debut, competing in a third works Renault at the Portuguese Grand Prix in Estoril, finishing last due to a gearbox problem. Streiff spent his first two Formula One seasons with Tyrrell, although the British outfit failed to achieve positive results for both driver and team. Streiff gained 11 championship points in 53 F1 races. In the 1981 Le Mans 24 Hours, the lanky Frenchman finished third with Rondeau.
