“My name is Jim Gardner, and I work with the entire Action News crew. “Goodnight,” the longtime 6ABC anchor remarked as she signed off for the last time. Jim Gardner’s illustrious Action News career ends this week when he anchors his final 6 p.m. programme. Gardner’s last 11 p.m. broadcast was in January. Jim’s influence on how television news is reported in the Philadelphia area and the audience’s appreciation for him after all these years cannot be overstated. Since 1976, Jim Gardner has helped Action News viewers navigate every major and minor news event. Jim has entertained generations of families by repeating the day’s headlines in their living rooms.

Who is Jim Gardner?

Gardner, 74, was born, raised, and educated in New York City but has spent most of his adult life in the Philadelphia area, where he has deep ties. Gardner has covered significant events in our area, both from the anchor desk and on the ground. While many of those experiences are memorable, Gardner is most proud of his longevity and consistency, having been present at 6 and 11 every day for 46 years. 6ABC will host a week-long tribute to Jim Gardner’s extraordinary career at Action News.

Early Life of Jim Gardner:

Gardner grew up on the Upper East Side of New York City. His father was Joseph Goldman, a Mount Sinai Medical Center professor and chief of the ear, nose, and throat department. He went to Fieldston School for Ethical Culture. Columbia University awarded him a Bachelor of Arts in political science in 1970. He covered the 1968 Columbia University protests for the university’s radio station, WKCR-FM.

Gardner started as a reporter for WFAS radio in White Plains, New York, in 1972 and quickly rose to the news director position. He began his television broadcasting career two years later at WKBW-TV in Buffalo, New York. Gardner was employed with WPVI in Philadelphia from June 1, 1976, to December 21, 2022. Since May 11, 1977, he had been the sole anchor of the 6:00 p.m. daily newscasts. From 1980 until the present, he has covered every Democratic and Republican presidential convention and interviewed every president and major presidential candidate since 1976. Gardner declared his plan to retire from broadcasting at the end of 2022 on November 10, 2021.

Jim Gardner Action News:

The Action News brand was built on brief stories, live coverage, and the strategic determination to cover the Philadelphia city itself. Garner and well-known colleagues Jim O’Brien, Dave Roberts, and Gary Papa covered high-profile topics ranging from the US Bicentennial to the presidential cycles and two Papal visits. “Say someone started watching me when they were 15, and now they’re 60 — and I’m still here,” he says. “I guess you could say I was a part of their life path,” he explained. Gardner now lives in Villanova with his wife, Amy Goldman, 45 years after his big break.
