The Social Security Administration began disbursing the three December payments this Monday. We’ll explain how the system works below if you have yet to receive your Social Security check. This month, you should also seek a letter informing you of your Social Security cost-of-living benefit rise for 2023. The letter will include information regarding your benefit rate increase for the coming year; alternatively, you can check your benefits online through your My Social Security account. You’ll receive your first boost in benefit amount in January. Supplemental Security Income will receive its first COLA payment boost at the end of this month.
How are Social Security payment dates determined?
The Social Security Administration makes payments on the second, third, and fourth Wednesdays of each month. Your birthday determines which Wednesday you receive your money. SSI payments are usually received on the first of each month. We’ll break it down for you. If your birthday comes between the 1st and 10th of the month, you will receive your payment on the second Wednesday. If your birthday comes between the 11th and 20th of the month, you will receive your compensation on the third Wednesday. If your birthday comes between the 21st and 31st of the month, you will receive your reward on the fourth Wednesday.
What if we receive Social Security and SSI?
The payment schedule is different if you earned Social Security payments before May 1997 or received both Social Security and SSI. Instead of receiving payments on Wednesdays, you will receive your Social Security payment on the third day and your SSI payment on the first day of the month. Those payment dates are changed if the first or third day of the month comes on a weekend. For example, because October 1 fell on a Saturday this year, SSI beneficiaries received their October payments on Sept. 30 and their Social Security payment on Monday, October 3. The same will be confirmed in December for payments made in January 2023.
What if we still need to receive my cheque by the deadline?
Suppose your check comes on a different date than the date mentioned above due to your birth date or other circumstances. The Social Security Administration advises you to wait three more mailing days before contacting them. If you still need to get it, contact a representative at 800-772-1213. Wait times to speak with a representative are reduced Wednesday through Friday and later in the day, according to the SSA (between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. local time). While waiting, you can view your Social Security benefits online at ssa.gov/myaccount. This story is updated every month when the payment dates change.
