In 1954, Mahoney sent some of his illustrations to Barry Appleby, who, along with his wife Dobs, produced the Daily Express comic strip “The Gambols.” Barry encouraged him to keep going, and they later became lasting friends. Roger created several newspaper cartoons, including Mandy Capp for the Mirror in 1997 and The Gambols. Andy Capp was taken over by him in 2000. Because of Roger Kettle’s scripts, the transfer was simple. Lawrence Goldsmith and Co began writing when Kettle retired in 2010. Roger released his final strip on November 14, 2020, at 87. However, he continued to work on The Gambols until his death.
