Canada’s Denis Joseph “D. J.” Smith is a seasoned ice hockey coach and former player. On May 13, 1977, he was born. Smith played in 61 games in his first season with the Spitfires in 1994-1995, accruing 201 penalty minutes, the second-highest total on the team, while scoring 4 goals and accruing 17 points. In 10 postseason games, Smith scored a goal and contributed four points as the Spitfires defeated the Sarnia Sting in the first round before falling to the Sudbury Wolves in the OHL quarterfinals. Smith’s offensive production significantly increased in 1995–96, his second season with the Spitfires. With 59 points and 14 goals in 64 games, Smith was tied for fourth on the team. Smith led the staff with 260 penalty minutes. Smith played in seven playoff games, scoring one goal and eight points, but the Spitfires were defeated by the Detroit Whalers in the first round.
