11-Month-Old Infant Dies Due To A Battered Infant Syndrome; Father Charged With Second-Degree Murder

A man in Louisiana and pregnant woman have been arrested by authorities and charged with murder for their alleged role in the death of infant daughter. Police claimed that the 11-month-old girl had been a victim of Battered Infant Syndrome— a severe type of abuse for a long time and death is the ultimate result of the accumulated injuries, Law and Crime reported.

Jake Michael Guidry, the infant’s father, was charged with second-degree murder in his daughter’s death in late September, according to The Houma Courier report. Kageionna Butler, 21, was arrested by deputies from the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office (LPSO) on Sunday and charged with one count of primary to second-degree murder in the death of Zabria Guidry.

Guidry Hit Zabria Very Hard

After receiving a phone from Kageionna at approximately 12:15 a.m. on Sept. 28, deputies were dispatched to the couple’s residence in the 600 block of Brule Guillot Road in Thibodaux to check on Zabria. First responders say they discovered the infant dead in the cargo hold of Jake’s SUV when they arrived at the house. Jake allegedly informed detectives at the scene after being questioned about his daughter’s murder that he hit Zabria very hard.

The decision to charge Butler in connection with Zabria’s death was made after an autopsy report revealed that the child had suffered multiple severe injuries over the course of several weeks, indicating that her death was not the result of a single isolated beating, according to Sheriff Craig Webre.

The battered infant syndrome was determined as the cause of death in the autopsy findings. There looked to be multiple serious injuries over a period of time rather than a single fatal one. The father has accepted responsibility for his conduct but has offered no explanation other than he hit the baby too hard. However, the pathology report clearly shows that there was more than one occurrence.

Butler Neglected The Abuse

Butler was fully aware of the cruelty being inflicted on her daughter, according to the sheriff, but did not protect the child. The mother was always in the company of the father and newborn during the time when the infant was maltreated and did not take any efforts to seek medical assistance or bring the abuse to the notice of law authorities, Webre added.

Butler was arrested and held on a $1 million bond in the Lafourche Parish jail. She also faces a possible sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Butler’s current pregnancy, according to Sheriff Webre, just adds to the unfortunate circumstances of the case.
