Pastor Described How They were Attacked

In a recently published article in Newsweek, Pastor Daniel Miller of Newton Township told WBRE/WYOU of the “sheer fear” he felt when a guy broke into his house about 4 a.m. on September 15. After hearing heavy bangs, Miller claimed he spotted 44-year-old suspect Christopher Phillips at his door, whom he instantly knew.

Pastor Miller shared “I opened the door and yelled ‘what are you doing here?’ He said ‘get out here you’re not Pastor Dan’. I said ‘I am Pastor Dan, two days ago I baptized you in the swimming pool right here’. He said ‘you did not, you’re not Pastor Dan’ and he said ‘get out here.”

“He put his fists up. He wanted to fight me. He was going to beat me to death with his hands. Little did I know he did that to his father before, he thought he’d beat his father to death. I didn’t know that of course at the time.”

Pastor Almost Shoot the Suspect

Miller then informed Christopher Phillips that he had a pistol before escaping with his wife into the restroom. The pastor, although being armed, said that he did not want to shoot the 44-year-old.

Miller said “I knew if he breached the door and he’s coming in we have to do something and my only thought was God I don’t want to shoot somebody. I know his family so I don’t want to shoot anybody but at the same time if your life is in danger I guess I would have.”

Miller claimed he and his wife then fled barefoot through the woods to a neighbor’s home, escaping via the bathroom window.

Police Detained the Suspect

After a physical fight, police arrived at the residence and arrested the culprit. Accused of aggravated assault, simple assault, harassment, burglary, criminal trespassing, criminal mischief, disorderly behavior, and resisting arrest, Christopher Philips is now facing charges.
