In an unannounced visit to Kyiv, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin reaffirmed the unwavering support of the United States for Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression. The visit, marking Austin’s third to Ukraine and second since Russia’s invasion, included crucial talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Defense Minister Rustem Umerov.
During the discussions, Secretary Austin emphasized the enduring commitment of the United States to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities. He assured Ukrainian leaders that the US would continue to provide the necessary support for their success on the battlefield. Addressing reporters after the talks on Monday, Austin stated, “I wanted to reassure the leadership that the United States of America will continue to support Ukraine.”
As a testament to this commitment, Austin announced a new security assistance package for Ukraine, valued at up to $100 million (£79.8 million). The package includes additional air defense capabilities, artillery ammunition, and anti-tank weapons. The aid aims to enhance Ukraine’s military capabilities and fortify its position in the ongoing conflict.
The US has been a steadfast supporter of Ukraine throughout the conflict, providing a total of $44.2 billion in security assistance since the start of the war. The continuous backing reflects a collaborative effort with allies, including the Ukrainian Defense Contact Group—a US-led coalition of nearly 50 countries dedicated to supporting Ukraine.
Secretary Austin praised the collective efforts of the Defense Contact Group, highlighting its effectiveness in addressing Ukraine’s security needs. “That group has roared into action, and we have continued to work together to provide much-needed security assistance in the form of artillery platforms, tanks, munitions,” Austin noted, commending the contributions of the international allies.
The visit provided an opportunity for the leaders to align ongoing operations and objectives on the battlefield. Austin emphasized the importance of maintaining this alignment to ensure the effectiveness of the support provided. The discussions reflected a collaborative approach to address the evolving dynamics of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
In the coming days, Secretary Austin is set to host the 17th meeting of the Ukrainian Defense Contact Group. This meeting underscores the ongoing commitment of the international community to work together in supporting Ukraine’s defense and promoting stability in the region.
As geopolitical tensions persist, the US reaffirms its dedication to standing by Ukraine and fostering collaborative efforts to address the challenges posed by the conflict with Russia. The security assistance package announced during Austin’s visit underscores the tangible support provided by the United States in Ukraine’s quest for security and sovereignty.
