A volcano in Iceland erupted on Saturday evening, the fourth in three months. At night, the explosion spewed orange lava into the sky. Following the eruption, Icelandic police announced a state of emergency at 8:23 p.m. (2023 GMT) on Saturday evening.
A state of emergency has been issued in southern Iceland following yet another volcanic explosion on the Reykjanes Peninsula, the fourth since December.
Iceland in State of Emergency
The eruption began Saturday evening north of the mostly evacuated village of Grindavik, according to the country’s meteorological service.
On Monday, authorities declared the fishing village and surrounding infrastructure safe for the time being, despite the fact that the volcano was still spouting lava.
Photographer Jakob Vegerfors from Reykjavik was able to capture these images of the eruption.
Is Iceland volcano still erupting?
A volcanic outburst that started over the weekend has, according to Icelandic scientists, finally begun to stabilize. However, two sections of a roughly 2-mile-long fissure that appeared just outside the evacuated seaside village of Grindavík are still gushing lava.
The eruption on Saturday was the fourth to be recorded in the region since December, and it started without much notice shortly before 8:30 p.m. local time (4:30 p.m. EDT). Since 2021, there have been other volcanic explosions in the area; nevertheless, authorities believe that Saturday’s eruption was perhaps the biggest in the previous three years.
