After a car fire ignited a massive conflagration, Britain’s London Luton Airport has delayed all flights until 1400 GMT on Wednesday. It caused the partial collapse of one of its multi-story parking garages.
Massive Fire Near Luton Airport Temporarily Halts All Flights
The fire did not result in any fatalities. This was initially reported to emergency services late Tuesday evening.
Images from the scene show massive flames rushing through the structure, which is also located near the airport terminal.
“Our top priority continues to be assisting emergency services and ensuring the safety of our passengers and employees.” As a result, we have decided to postpone all flights until 3 p.m. on Wednesday,” the airport said in a post on X.
The stoppage was previously scheduled to last until 1100 GMT.
According to the local fire service, up to 1,200 cars could have been in the parking lot at the time. And that rescue crews were likely to remain on the scene for several hours as of 0600 GMT.
“One half of the structure was fully involved in fire and the building suffered a significant structural collapse.” The fire department went on to say that this was a big incident.
London Luton Airport Fire Prompts Investigations and Disrupts Airlines
They stated that a thorough investigation would be conducted to ascertain the cause of the incident.
According to the ambulance service, four firefighters and one airport employee were sent to the hospital.
After Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, and Manchester, Luton is the fifth busiest airport in the United Kingdom. According to the Civil Aviation Authority, it also would handle 13.3 million passengers in 2022.
Which airlines will be impacted?
EasyJet, which operates flights from Luton Airport. Additionally, “airlines are currently experiencing some disruption to their flying programmes.”
Ryanair and Wizz Air said they would contact affected passengers as quickly as feasible.
