A 5.4-magnitude earthquake slammed West Texas on Friday, sending the ground trembling again. The US Geological Survey detected the earthquake around 5:35 p.m., roughly 13 miles outside of Midland, Texas. The USGS also reported a 3.3-magnitude aftershock about three minutes later in the same area as the previous one. There were no reports of severe damage or injuries at the time. The quake with a similar 5.4 magnitude tremor slammed the area. The USGS documented one at Mentone, Texas, just south of the border with New Mexico. According to published sources, the quake was felt as far away as San Antonio.
Midland Texas Earthquake:
Nearly a month after a magnitude-5.4 earthquake shook parts of Texas, people were caught off guard again Friday evening by another magnitude-5.5 quake centred near Midland. The US Geological Survey said that the earthquake occurred around 3 miles beneath rural Texas terrain. However, the shaking was felt throughout a large area stretching from New Mexico to the centre of Texas. According to seismologists, small earthquakes are widespread in Texas, although more prominent events are unusual. Many quakes have been related to oil fracturing and underground fluid reinjection. “The area is recognised for its oil and gas output, which will be investigated. A Strong Earthquake:
The 5.4-magnitude quake in November, which happened approximately 100 miles from the epicentre of Friday’s earthquake, prompted the state’s oil and gas authorities to impose stricter temporary limitations on oil and gas production to help decrease seismic activity. Seismologists said it was too soon to tell whether the most recent quake was caused by wastewater injection. Researchers will continue to work around the clock to determine the cause.
