Breel Donald Embolo is a professional football player who currently plays forward for Ligue 1 Club Monaco and the Swiss national team. He was born on February 14, 1997. Embolo and his family moved to France before settling in Switzerland. Embolo progressed through Basel’s junior divisions before making his professional debut for the club in March 2014. Before joining Schalke 04 for an initial €20 million, he won the Swiss Super League in each of his first three seasons. Soon after joining the Bundesliga, he suffered an ankle injury that prevented him from playing for nearly a year. Embolo started out with Nordstern as a young football player. In 2010, he entered Basel’s youth system through Old Boys. During the 2011–12 and 2012–13 seasons, he played for Basel’s U-16 team. With the U-16 team, he twice won the Swiss Championship at this level. He received several individual honours, such as 2013 Basel Youngster of the Year. Three weeks after turning 16, he signed his first professional deal with the club. In the summer of 2013, he advanced to play for their U-18 and U-21 teams. Embolo made his professional debut on March thirteen at St. Jakob-Park during the 1st leg of the Europa League round of sixteen as a substitute for Geoffroy Serey. In a scoreless draw, Red Bull Salzburg and the opposition played. He made his Swiss Super League debut 3 days later when he came on as a substitute in the 85-th minute of the team’s 5-0 home triumph over Aarau. He netted the game’s last and first goal for the team just four minutes later. At the end of the 2013–2014 Super League season, he and Basel won the league title. They also made it to the 2013–14 Swiss Cup final, however Embolo sat on the sidelines as they lost to Zürich 2-0 in overtime.
