Over the years I’ve collected some tried and tested flu remedies to keep my family feeling our best. While I love my garlic, raw honey, and elderberry, it’s nice to have a few targeted remedies in the arsenal.
People think of red-dyed, cherry-flavored cough syrups. Traditional cough syrup suppresses the cough, not the problem. Multiple coughs exist.
EQUIPMENT– Saucepan– Pint size mason jar
INGREDIENTS– 1/3 cup wild cherry bark– 1/4 cup mullein leaf– 1/4 cup rose hips or hibiscus– 2 TBSP elderberry– 3 cups water– 1 cup raw honey
INSTRUCTIONS– Combine the herbs and water in a saucepan and heat to a boil.– Reduce to a simmer and cook until the liquid has reduced to about 1 cup, about 30-40 minutes.
– Strain out the herbs with a coffee filter and measure the liquid. Add enough water to reach 1 sup, or simmer it some more until there's only 1 cup.
– Stir in the honey and store in a clean glass jar in the fridge.
NOTES– Shelf life: This should last several weeks in the fridge– To use: Take a teaspoon as needed throughout the day, up to once an hour. Children can have 1/2 teaspoon as needed, up to once an hour.
