TCW Group named Goldman Sachs Group Inc.’s Kathryn Koch as the California money manager’s new president and chief executive.

Ms. Koch, 42 years old, was a partner at Goldman and served as investment chief of the asset-management division’s $300 billion public-equities business.

At TCW, she’ll succeed David Lippman, who plans to retire in December.

Ms. Koch’s appointment is a big step toward the money manager’s push to refresh its leadership team.

The Wall Street Journal reported in August 2021 that the firm had sought to move on from Mr. Lippman and the longtime head of its bond-investing business, Tad Rivelle, after several other key executives threatened to quit.

Mr. Rivelle retired at the end of 2021.
