Texans load up with trade for Bills’ Pro Bowl receiver Stefon Diggs

Stefon Diggs, Allen’s most reliable and productive target, was traded to Houston on Wednesday, along with a couple of day-three draft picks, in exchange for a 2025 second-rounder. The compensation was uninspiring for a 30-year-old wideout who made the Pro Bowl last year, likely a sign this move was more about off-loading a locker-room nuisance and less a typical roster-building decision.

This is because if there was one clear takeaway from the 2023 Buffalo Bills experience, which included a midseason offensive coordinator change, countless injuries to key players, a 9/11 controversy, and, somehow, a division title, it was that Josh Allen needed more help.
The 30-year-old Diggs is a four-time Pro Bowler who led the league by receiving yards in 2020. He has had more than 1,000 receiving yards every season since 2018 and helped the Bills become a consistent force in the playoffs alongside quarterback Josh Allen. However, he is at an age when many receivers’ production starts to drop off, and he caused occasional stirs with several sideline outbursts and the frustration he showed after the Bills’ 2022 season ended with a 27-10 loss to Cincinnati in a divisional round playoff.

The dustups led Diggs to reiterate his loyalty to the Bills several times, including saying he wanted to finish his career in Buffalo.
In addition to Diggs’s arrival, the Texans have added other weapons this offseason. They acquired running back Joe Mixon from the Cincinnati Bengals and added star pass rusher Danielle Hunter in free agency. The Texans’ defensive end, Will Anderson Jr., was named Defensive Rookie of the Year last season.
Allen’s situation is far from perfect now, with Diggs, Davis, and Morse subtracted from the offense and Tre’Davious White, Jordan Poyer, Micah Hyde, and Leonard Floyd gone on defense. The roster purge was necessary because of the salary cap, but the Bills will be massively feeling the effects this season.
