Not many people anticipated the rebuilding Cyclones to accomplish much this season, at least not outside the locker room of the Iowa State women’s basketball team. It seems like Iowa Hawkeyes can also prevail in a close game.
A sellout audience of 14,324 watched No. 2 Iowa battle over West Virginia, 64-54, in an NCAA women’s basketball second-round match on Monday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena thanks to defense and free throws.

The Hawkeyes (31-4) could only moan and groan their way back to the Sweet 16 as they were held well below their 92.6 points per game, which led the country.

On Saturday (time TBA), they will play No. 17 Colorado (24-9) in a regional semifinal at MVP Arena in Albany, N.Y.

With 2:57 remaining, the Mountaineers tied the game at 50-50 and then 52-52 after West Virginia (25-8) scored the first 10 points of the fourth quarter to create a 48-48 tie.
