‘California Soul singer’ Marlena Shaw dies at 81 | See Cause of Death

Marlena Shaw was a popular American, blues, jazz, and soul singer. In the 1960s, Marlena began her singing career.

Marlena Shaw released a total of 17 albums with eight different record labels.

She became famous after joining Chess Records in 1966. Two of their albums, ‘Out of Different Bags’ (1967) and ‘The Spice of Life’ (1969), were released under the branch of the label called Cadet Records.

These albums included popular songs such as ‘California Soul’ and ‘Woman of the Ghetto’. ‘California Soul’, written by Ashford & Simpson, was widely sampled by other artists and even featured in various TV commercials.

Marlena Shaw Cause of Death

Recently, the news of the death of soul and jazz singer Marlena Shaw has created a stir in the internet world. Marlena Shaw died on 19 January 2024, aged 81.

The news of Marlena Shaw’s death was announced by her daughter in a video posted on Facebook on Friday. The cause of the death of Marlena Shaw has not been disclosed yet.

Bradshaw said in the video- “It’s with a very heavy heart for myself and my family I announce that our beloved mother, your beloved icon and artist Marlena Shaw has passed away today at 12:03. She was peaceful.We were at peace.”

She continues- “She went listening to some of her favorite songs.”

In 1987, Verve Records worked with Marlena Shaw. Verve Records shared a statement on Marlena’s death on Facebook and wrote- “We are saddened by the passing of Marlena Shaw, a wonderful singer whose ‘California Soul’ is as popular today as it ever was and whose album ‘It Is Love: Recorded Live At Vine St.’ helped relaunch the Verve label in 1987.”

Marlena Shaw Early Life

Marlina Burgess’ real name was Marlena Shaw. She was born on September 22, 1942, in New Rochelle, New York, U.S. Marlena Shaw did her studies at the State University of New York at Potsdam.
