On Sunday, Dr. Fauci had an interview together with the news anchor George Stephanopoulos on ABC, he was asked if the newly Omicron variant had already been detected by officials in the U.S. Fauci answered directly “No, we have not, George, and we have a pretty good surveillance system. But, as we all know, when you have a virus that has already gone to multiple countries, inevitably it will be here,”.
Furthermore, Fauci was also interviewed regarding the travel ban restriction imposed by Biden Administration. According to Fauci, it would not stop the omicron variant to come into the U.S but it serves to slow down its coming in that such time the medical experts had the time to gather all the information by utilizing any means to be prepared and respond for the new variant which the World Health Organization called a “variant of concern” last week if it will be in the U.S.
The director of the National Institutes of Health, Francis Collins, said during an interview on “Fox News Sunday” that it will take weeks for the scientists to fully understand how effective COVID-19 vaccines are at protecting against the new omicron variant.
Other Countries that have detected with the new Variant
The World Health Organization identified the Omicron as a “variant of concern” on Friday. It was first detected in South Africa and spread to other countries including Botswana and Belgium. Two cases have also been discovered in the UK on Saturday, according to a health official.
The Omicron variant has already been detected in several countries to impose restrictions such as travel bans on several southern African countries, against the advice of the World Health Organization, while others have implemented total lockdowns to contain the spread of COVID-19.
