Charles Shbraj was finally released from prison after spending nearly about two decades. He was popularly known as the “Bikini Killer” in Asia in the 1970s and 1980s. Police believed that he killed more than 20 foreigners in Asia at that time. Now, after being free from the prison in Nepal on Saturday, he returned to France. On Wednesday, the Supreme Court of Nepal ordered the release of Sobhraj, also known as “the Serpent”, for his evasion of police, citing his old age and health issues.
He held French national citizenship; his mother was Vietnamese, while his father was Indian. Seventy-eight years Sobhraj landed at Paris airport on a commercial flight. After the arrival, Sobhraj met his lawyer inside the building, as told by Jean-Charles Deniau, the writer of ‘Moi, le Serpent'(Me, the Serpent). According to French media Border, the police did all the official identity checks, but the lawyer did not comment on Charles’s current issue.
“The Bikini” killer was caught in 2003 on the charge of the murder of American tourist Connie Jo Bronzich in the year 1975 after he was kept in a very high-security jail in Nepal. After some, he was also found responsible for killing Laurent Carriere, Bronzich’s Candian friend then served 19 years out of a 20- year sentence. But according to some unofficial sources, he was suspected of more than twenty murders in Thailand. If we believe in Thailand police, Charles killed six women in the 1970s; all were found dead on the beach of Pattaya.
For poisoning, a group of French tourists in the capital of India, New Delhi, Charles was sentenced to jail in 1976. After this incident, a trial was also started against him in Thailand. Shobhraj gave an interview with french media. He claimed that he was not guilty of murdering Carriere and Bronzich and the case was built against was based on the fake documents.
According to the french News agency AFP, 78 years old, Charles said, ” I have a lot of things to do, now i’m ready to sue a lot of people”. Associates previously described Charles as a robber, murderer and con artist. BBC and Netflix released the web series based on Charles Sobhra’s all alleged killings and other strange things done by him.
