Terry Hall, the band’s principal singer and a former member of Fun Boy Three and the Colourfield, died at 63, according to The Specials. It stated, “It is with great regret that we announce the demise, following a brief illness, of Terry, our lovely friend, brother and one of the most gifted singers, songwriters and lyricists this country has ever produced.” The band asked privacy for Hall’s family. Neville Staple, Hall’s bandmate in the Specials and Fun Boy Three, expressed “deep sadness” at the news. Terry Hall’s cause of death was not announced yet. Who is Terry Hall?
Hall was born in Coventry on March 19, 1959, to parents who mainly worked in the automotive industry. He was a well-known footballer and gifted student who was allowed to try out for West Bromwich Albion, but his parents declined to owe to the hardship of travelling across the Midlands. Despite performing extraordinarily well on the 11-plus exam, his parents refused a spot for him in a nearby grammar school. Soon after the Coventry band’s founding in 1977, Hall replaced vocalist Tim Strickland and joined the original lineup of the Specials, then known as the Automatics.

Hall made light of the notion that his purpose in joining a band was “to annoy people” in a cover story for NME in 2019. “You could feel the animosity breeding from day one really, and you’ll discover that that’s what occurs – like when people come over and take these phoney ‘jobs,'” he said of the flood of immigration from the West Indies, Uganda, and Northern Ireland during his early school years. One of The Specials’ many accolades was the 2010 NME Award for Outstanding Contribution To Music. “This is the most urban honour we’ve ever received, and I can’t believe how disgusting it is!” Hall remarked as he accepted the prize.
