Asad, who died on Sunday, was fighting for his life in the high-dependency unit at Avenue Hospital in Nairobi after a domestic altercation led to the arrest of his girlfriend, a rally star.
“Yes, my brother Asad has left us for good. We have been at his bedside since he was taken to hospital with stab wounds. It’s really sad,” Adil told Nation Sport on Sunday.
Adil said his brother lost a lot of blood after the brutal attack last Monday. According to Adil, his brother was injured by Maxine Wahome on Jamhuri day after she allegedly came home drunk from a dinner party he attended on the night of 11 December.
Asad was a recognized rally driver at the peak of his rallying career. His participation in a Subaru Impreza has always been the highlight of his competition.
With his younger brother Adil, the couple ran a mechanical workshop dedicated to rally cars.
Both also led a team of mechanics as Service Crew members for the Young FIA Team who competed in several events across the continent this year. In an earlier interview on Wednesday, when Asad was rushed to hospital, Adil told Nation Sport that due to the injuries his brother sustained, it was clear he was being attacked by other people who were in Maxine’s company.
“It’s my brother who trained Maxine in rallying. He has helped her family immensely and helped her develop her talent,” Adil said.
Police arrested Maxine for grievous bodily harm, but she was released on bail. If she is prosecuted and convicted, the crime could earn her a life sentence. Adil said he would “pursue justice for his brother”. The police have already arrested Maxine Wahome and brought her to justice. She is released on bail of 100,000 shillings.
Adil had claimed a sinister plan throughout the saga since it was the management of Preston Court, where the lovers live, who called him around 1 p.m. Monday.
“Maxine was arrested in Kilimani following a report from Adil that she caused life-threatening injuries to her brother Asad,” said Bernard Ochoi, Milimani senior magistrate, who released Maxine on bail on Wednesday, to about prosecutor James Gachoka. Gachoka had asked to detain Maxine for 14 days to allow the police to complete their investigation.
But Ms Wahome’s lawyer, Steve Kimathi, has opposed her application, saying she is willing to help the police investigate the case.
“The nature of the crime the police are investigating is bail. I urge this court to release the defendant on bail pending the completion of the investigation,” Kimathi said.
He said he does not pose a flight risk and will comply with all conditions imposed by the court. Ochoi was told police visited the scene “which appeared to be disturbed by household items strewn throughout the dining room and a pool of blood on the floor and stairs.”
The investigating officer, Stephen Kibei, asked for more time to complete the investigation.
Ochoi agreed with Kimathi that the crime the police are carrying out against Maxine is bail under the penal code.
He also said bail was a constitutional right for any suspect before releasing her on Sh100,000 bail.
Ms Wahome was instructed to report to the investigating officer at the Kilimani Police Station every Monday until the investigation was completed.
Police had asked for 14 days to detain the suspect until Assad’s condition improves. Assad’s death could now lead to a change in the charges.
