Head football coach Mike Leach of Mississippi State passed away late on Monday due to complications from a cardiac issue, the institution reported on Tuesday. He was 61. In a letter to the school, the Leach family described Mike as a kind and kind husband, father, and grandfather. He was able to give his organs to UMMC as a final act of kindness. We have been supported and inspired by the support and prayers we have gotten from family, friends, Mississippi State University, the medical community, and football fans all around the world. We thank you sharing in the joy of our loving husband and father’s life.
“Mike will be missed. Every discussion you had with Mike prompted thought. His wit, profundity, and point of view constantly forced us all to reconsider our assumptions and ways of thinking. We support Mike’s wife Sharon, their children, grandkids, current and past players, coaching colleagues, and the Mississippi State community as we grieve his untimely loss. The two-time national coach of the year at Mississippi State was in his third season. This season, he helped the Bulldogs to an 8-4 record.

Leach spent 10 seasons at Texas Tech, 8 at Washington State, and 3 at Mississippi State while compiling a 158-107 career record.
In a statement, Texas Tech said, “Texas Tech Athletics joins the countless others who grieve the death of Mike Leach.”
“Coach Leach will always be regarded as one of the most creative offensive minds in the annals of college football. His influence alone on Texas Tech Football will go down in history as one of the best periods for our programme.
Washington State also paid tribute to the person who “changed the game of football.”
We were lucky to have Coach Leach oversee the WSU Football programme for 8 years, according to Pat Chun, director of athletics at WSU. Mike will never be forgotten, he will always be cherished.
