Hall excelled in all sports at Lawrence High School, just a short drive from the University of Kansas campus, but he made it as a Jayhawk football player. As a sophomore, he set a record of 94 yards, which is still in use. John Hadl did for the most extended interception return, a 98-yarder, until 2007. Hadl helped Kansas win 14 games and five games in his final as a halfback, respectively. In the 1961 Bluebonnet Bowl, the two-time All-American led the Jayhawks to their first bowl victory over Rice.

Hadl was drafted 24th overall by the San Diego and 10th by the Detroit Lions in the 1962 NFL draught, where he eventually decided to pursue his career.
