Former Republican National Committee head Ronna McDaniel has only appeared once on NBC News programming in her new role as a political news contributor, and senior executives are already convening to launch an investigation.
Why McDaniel was fired?
The controversial would-be commentator’s firing was announced following multiple complaints about McDaniel’s behavior that was harmful to journalism and democracy from prominent members of NBC and its sister station MSNBC.
Chairman of the NBCU News Group Cesar Conde sent a memo to the entire NBC news group stating, “After listening to the legitimate concerns of many of you, I have decided that Ronna McDaniel will not be an NBC News contributor,” the network reported. “A newsroom in particular needs to be coherent and well-aligned in order to succeed. It has become evident over the past few days that this appointment is counterproductive to that objective.
In the opening paragraph of that message, Conde acknowledged that since McDaniel’s employment as a political analyst was disclosed on Friday, things “have been difficult” for NBC News employees.
Important people at MSNBC and NBC objected to McDaniel’s addition to the newscasts’ roster. During her lone appearance on Sunday, Chuck Todd, the former host of “Meet the Press,” informed Kristen Welker, his replacement, that corporate executives owed her “an apology” for failing to disclose that McDaniel was being paid by the network before she was scheduled to appear on the show.
What McDaniel Next Move?
What McDaniel will do next is unknown. At the time of publishing, she had not publicly commented on NBC’s decision and was not reachable.
The Hollywood Reporter claims that in addition to being let go by NBC on Tuesday, McDaniel was also apparently let go by Creative Artists Agency (CAA), which arranged her contract with the network not long after quitting the RNC.
