During a Wednesday appearance at the University of Memphis, Kyle Rittenhouse unexpectedly left the stage. following his questioning over remarks made by Charlie Kirk, the president and founder of Turning Point USA.
The college’s Turning Point USA chapter invited Rittenhouse to give a speech on campus. Some students, however, took issue with Rittenhouse’s attendance and protested the event.
How did protesters respond?
About 200 individuals showed up in opposition to Rittenhouse’s appearance before the event, much outnumbering the number of those who came in favor of him. They carried signs with messages such as “No killers on my campus” and “Put Rittenhouse behind bars not a podium.”
In 2021, a Wisconsin jury found that Rittenhouse had murdered the two demonstrators in self-defense. This was a contentious ruling that many perceived as a denial of justice, and Rittenhouse was cleared of all charges. He gained even more notoriety in the GOP after his acquittal, and this spring, the party held an auction to raise money for gun range time with him.
After his unexpected departure from Memphis on Wednesday night, Rittenhouse posted from the security of a motel room. He merely “had a hard cut-off time” and chose to finish the event then rather than being jeered as he exited the stage.
