Pittsburgh’s short-lived but turbulent Kenny Pickett era is finished. The Associated Press has been informed by numerous sources that the quarterback is being traded by the Steelers to the Philadelphia Eagles. Since the agreement was not formal, the sources could only speak under condition of anonymity.
Pittsburgh selected Pickett in the first round of the 2022 draft, but he was unexpectedly dealt to the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday. According to Schefter, the Eagles acquired Pickett and the 120th overall pick in exchange for giving up the 98th pick and two 2025 seventh-round selections.
Pittsburgh was a failure for Kenny Pickett
Although Pickett struggled most of his debut season, he didn’t improve enough in his second. Next, he sprained his ankle high. When Pickett was down, Mason Rudolph provided the club with a spark, and even with Pickett healthy, head coach Mike Tomlin continued with Rudolph for the remainder of the campaign.
In the offseason, the Steelers attempted to maintain a positive attitude by stating that they still believed in Pickett. However, it was evident they would be searching for an upgrade. Wilson signed on after being released by the Broncos, expected to be the starter.
The reported reason behind Kenny Pickett’s trade
Given Russell Wilson’s age and the fact that he was only available on the cheap for this season because the Broncos were covering the majority of his salary. It appeared shocking that the Steelers were willing to trade away a younger quarterback. One would have expected a quarterback fight, with both competing for the starting spot.
