Carlos Alcaraz progressed to the BNP Paribas Open semifinals on Thursday night after defeating Alexander Zverev 6-3, 6-1. Despite a nearly two-hour delay brought on by a swarm of bees.
Alcaraz batted at the crowding bees and went in search of cover. This led to the match being suspended after just 19 minutes, with a 1-1 score. Using a vacuum, a man without any protective clothing removed dozens of bees that were hooked to the overhead spider camera that swung across the court. He also sprayed a bottle to get rid of the court’s benches and surrounding walls.
The match restarted after an hour and forty-eight minutes of delay. With an actual playing time of one hour and twenty-nine minutes.
Spaniard says Jannik Sinner is best tennis player
Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner square off on Saturday in Indian Wells for a berth in the BNP Paribas Open final. The Spaniard refers to the most recent Grand Slam victor as the best in the world at the moment.
Even though Alcaraz hasn’t won a championship since his Wimbledon victory in July of last year, he still looked like his best. He defeated Alexander Zverev and a swarm of bees on Thursday to go to the Indian Wells semifinals.
“Honestly, I don’t know how I’m going to approach the match,” Alcaraz said. “He’s without a doubt the best tennis player in the world at the moment. He is performing brilliantly; he hasn’t lost all year. It’s a lot of fun to watch him play.
