As a point guard, he played college basketball for just one season with the UCLA Bruins. During that time, he earned unanimous first-team All-American honors. Later, the Los Angeles Lakers selected him with the second overall selection in the 2017 NBA draft. He made the NBA All-Rookie Second Team in 2018.
During his rookie year in the NBA with the Lakers, he faced challenges due to shoulder and knee injuries, which limited his playing time. Unfortunately, he spent most of his second season recovering from an ankle injury. Eventually, he was traded to the New Orleans Pelicans as part of a deal for Anthony Davis.
After two seasons with the Pelicans, he joined the Bulls via a sign-and-trade agreement. However, a persistent knee injury has ruled him out for most of his time with the team, including the entire 2022–23 season.
