Mary Weiss was a famous American singer. She was well-recognized as the lead singer of the Shangri-Las in the 1960s.

Their song “Leader of the Pack” became really popular and reached the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1964. After that, she disappeared from making music for several years. But in 2007, she came back and released her first solo album with Norton Records.

Recently the news of Mary Weiss’s death is coming to light. Mary Weiss died on January 19, 2024, at her home in Palm Springs, California, United States, at the age of 75.

Mary Weiss’s cause of death was chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. After hearing the news of Mary Weiss’ death, her loved ones are paying tribute on social media.

Mary Weiss’ full name was Mary Louise Weiss. Mary Weiss was born to her parents Harry Weiss and Elizabeth Treubig on 28 December 1948 in Jamaica, New York, United States.

Mary Weiss has two siblings Elizabeth Weiss and George Weiss.

Mary Weiss was married. Mary Weiss’ husband was Edward Ryan.

After recording some demos, the Shangri-Las signed with Red Bird Records in 1964 and found themselves in the Brill Building. There, she collaborated with talented songwriters Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich. Together, they created their first hit, “Remember (Walking in the Sand)” and another chart-topper, “Leader of the Pack”. These songs were co-written and produced by Shadow Morton.

In the 1960s, the Shangri-Las became a popular girl group. However, in 1968, after spending several years together, they decided to go their separate ways. One of the members, Weiss, went to San Francisco to explore a different lifestyle. In 2019, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio honored the Shangri-Las’ song “Leader of the Pack” in its single category.

In 2005, Weiss made a major change. She left her job in commercial interiors to return to music. Despite not singing for almost 20 years, she was convinced to record a solo album in 2007, titled “Dangerous Game”. “I didn’t even sing on the car radio,” she admitted. In March 2007, Norton Records released “Dangerous Game” and it received critical acclaim. Weiss was backed by The Reigning Sound on this comeback album.
