Tim Scott did some important things in South Carolina. He served on the Charleston County Council from 1995 to 2009. After that, he served in the South Carolina General Assembly from 2009 to 2011. Later, he represented South Carolina’s 1st congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2011 – 2013.
Then, when Nikki Haley was governor of South Carolina, he elected Scott to the U.S. Senate in 2013. He won a special election in 2014 and was elected to a full term in 2016. People liked him so much that he was re-elected in 2022. This was a big deal because he had become the first African-American senator elected from the Southern United States a long time ago, during the Reconstruction era.
Tim Scott also wanted to run for president. In 2023, they started thinking about it and formed a group to test if it was a good idea. On May 19, he officially said he was going to run, and a few days later, he formally announced it. Unfortunately, he had to stop his campaign on November 12 of the same year because not many people were saying that they would vote for him.
