Perry High School Principal Dan Marburger, shot on January 4th

Dan Marburger, the principal of Perry High School, and six other people—two employees and four students—were hurt in the shooting that claimed the life of a sixth-grader. The teenager, 17, who opened fire also perished from what seemed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

What happened to Dan Marburger?

Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home & Crematory verified Marburger’s passing following the announcement on a GoFundMe page by the family.

“At approximately 8:00 am, January 14, Dan lost his battle,” the message said. “He fought hard and gave us 10 days that we will treasure forever.”

Claire Marburger, Marburger’s daughter, wrote on her Facebook page, “My dad was a wonderful man—a teacher, a spouse, a father, and a grandfather. A person I aim to be and hope to make proud every day. He will be sorely missed.

In the days following the shooting, Marburger was hailed as a hero by many. He put himself in harm’s path so kids could try to escape from the adolescent shooter who began a fire in the cafeteria as students were gathered for breakfast before class, the AP said.

Dan Marburger: Obituary

In a statement issued on Sunday afternoon, Perry Community School District administrators expressed their “deepest condolences with the Marburger family on the passing of Dan Marburger.” Dan was a devoted husband, father, and grandpa in addition to being a fantastic leader in our school system. Dan’s passing has devastated our school community. We are very saddened by the death of a dedicated and compassionate colleague who was a part of our Perry Community School District for almost thirty years.”

Perry had a really depressing day, according to school board president Linda Andorf. Andorf said how much she would miss his embrace and grin. She indicated that although the mending process would take time, it would occur.
