Oscar Pistorius is a South African former professional sprinter. He is a convicted murderer.
At just 11 months old, both his legs had to be amputated due to a birth defect, as he was born without the outer parts of both legs and both fibulae.
Former sprinter Pistorius competed in sprint events for both non-disabled individuals and below-the-knee amputees.
Oscar achieved the remarkable feat of being the 10th athlete to compete in both the Paralympic Games and the Olympic Games.
On February 14, 2013, Oscar Pistorius shot and killed his girlfriend, paralegal and model Reeva Steenkamp, in her Pretoria home. He insisted that he mistakenly thought Steenkamp was an intruder hiding in the bathroom.
Subsequently, Oscar was arrested and charged with murder. At his trial the following year, Pistorius was acquitted of murder but found guilty of culpable homicide.
South African former sprinter received a five-year prison sentence for culpable homicide and a three-year suspended sentence for a separate conviction relating to reckless endangerment.
In 2015, Pistorius was allowed to stay at home for some time while his case went to a higher court in South Africa, called the Supreme Court of Appeal. This court changed the original verdict of culpable homicide to murder.
In July 2016, Judge Thokozile Masipa increased Oscar Pistorius’ sentence to 6 years. After the state appealed for a harsher sentence, the Supreme Court of Appeal increased the prison term to a total of 15 years. Pistorius was granted parole and released on 5th January 2024.
