Thabo Mvuyelwa Mbeki known as Thabo Mbeki, was a South African politician.
He was the second president of South Africa, holding office from June 14, 1999, to September 24, 2008.
He stepped down at the request of his party, the African National Congress (ANC). Prior to this, he served as deputy president under Nelson Mandela from 1994 to 1999.
Mbeki, the son of Govan Mbeki, had been engaged in ANC politics since 1956 when he joined the ANC Youth League. He has been a member of the National Executive Committee of the party since 1975.
