In his first year in college in 2019, LaPorta started as the third-choice tight end. He did not catch his first two passes until week eight against Northwestern, leading his team to a 20–0 victory. Throughout the season, he played in 12 games, starting twice, and had 15 catches for 188 yards.
Entering his second year in 2020, Laporta continued to share the starting role with Bayer. In a game against Purdue, he had his best performance with five catches for a career-high 71 receiving yards, even though his team lost 24–20.
Fast forward to September 24, 2023, LaPorta accomplished a remarkable feat by becoming the first tight end to have five receptions in each of his first three games. He also set the record for most catches in that three-game span, totaling 18 receptions. Additionally, he scored his first career touchdown with a 45-yard catch-and-run, thanks to Jared Goff.
